Cappuccino studio designs interiors and makes cabinet furniture for the home, specialising in kitchens. Vision Lighting took part in lighting the company’s Kyiv showroom.

A designer furniture showroom is essentially a shop too. It needs general lighting of the floor and accent light on displays and furniture samples.

General and accent light for the Cappuccino furniture showroom

The lighting tasks in a furniture showroom are to zone the floor, create a cosy atmosphere associated with good furniture, accent the display samples and bring out the colour, texture and quality of materials.

A furniture showroom needs at least 250 lx, so staff and customers stay comfortable for a long time. General light comes from powerful surface-mounted or recessed luminaires that fit easily into Armstrong and grilyato ceilings. Accent spotlights on track create the cosy feel: without accents the floor and samples look dull.

If the display changes often, track systems or recessed downlights with adjustable (gimbal) heads are the better choice. Their light can be redirected, so samples can be moved without altering the ceiling.

Colour rendering and colour temperature for showing furniture

With cabinet furniture, customers look at surface texture and colour, so the quality of finishes matters. Accurate colour and texture need light sources with a high colour rendering index (CRI).

A warm 2700-3500 K colour temperature is recommended for a cosy furniture showroom, as people associate it with home. Kitchen units are better lit with neutral light, which suits food and work surfaces best.

Three typical showroom lighting mistakes:

1. Too little general light, with an average below 200 lx on the floor.
2. No accent light on display samples.
3. Poor-quality light sources with poor colour rendering.
