Classic track lighting systems have a lot going for them: they are easy to install, durable and lightweight, and they make even complex lighting scenes possible. But as it turns out, they can be improved further still by using magnetic tracks instead of conventional ones.
Advantages of magnetic track systems
Compared with conventional tracks, magnetic tracks offer the following advantages:
- Quick and easy installation. On conventional tracks, luminaires on adapters are fitted one after another, so if one needs replacing, you have to remove everything in front of it. Magnetic tracks are much simpler: the adapters attach directly to the surface and are held in place by neodymium magnets, so changing and fitting them is far easier. A magnetic track can even be installed by a non-specialist, provided the instructions are followed carefully.
- Safety. When working with conventional tracks, you may accidentally touch the wires running inside. It is not life-threatening, but it is unpleasant. A magnetic track system rules this out entirely, as the wires sit inside the track and you never come into contact with them during installation.
- Reliability. Neodymium magnets can hold even standard spotlights fitted on magnetic track adapters. They also work regardless of whether the power is on, so there is simply no risk of anything falling off.
- Versatility. Magnetic tracks can be mounted on the same suspensions or brackets as conventional ones, and connecting them to the mains is just as straightforward.
Types of magnetic tracks and where they are used
A magnetic lighting track can be recessed, surface-mounted, suspended, designed for stretch ceilings, or universal. The universal option is the best, as it suits any lighting scenario. It is also the most expensive, however, as it places high demands on design.
A magnetic track system makes the following lighting scenarios possible:
- General overhead lighting. One or more magnetic tracks fitted with LED spotlights or powerful overhead light sources via adapters.
- Accent lighting. For example, a surface-mounted magnetic track around the perimeter of a display, with LED spotlights set at different angles. Connect it to a lighting control system as well, and the output and direction of each luminaire can be adjusted individually.
- Functional lighting. For example, magnetic tracks with LED panels around the checkout area. They attract attention and provide light levels that meet the standards.
- Additional decorative lighting. Alongside the main light sources mentioned above, the same magnetic tracks can carry small LED panels in a different colour temperature, to be used separately or in combination.
Now you can see why buying a magnetic track is an excellent idea when it comes to lighting offices, retail spaces and even homes.
