The best way to light rooms with high ceilings is to use pendant luminaires. By adjusting the suspension length and choosing the shade design, you can achieve almost any effect you need.
What are the advantages of pendant luminaires?
- The best option for high ceilings. By adjusting the suspension length, you can get either general diffused light or a fairly narrow beam.
- Easy installation. Pendant luminaires are essentially the familiar chandeliers that installers have long known how to handle. The hardest part is fitting a secure suspension, which has to take into account the luminaire weight and the ceiling type.
- Versatility. Pendant luminaires look natural in rooms of almost any design. Many models also offer a choice of shade colour or even shape to match the setting.

What to consider when choosing
Before you buy pendant luminaires, decide on the following points:
- Single, double or multiple light sources. More sources give brighter light but make it harder to control and aim precisely.
- Number of switching channels. This matters for multi-lamp pendants: the lamps can be switched independently, which can be very useful.
- Suspension length and type: chains, metal rods, load-bearing cables and so on. Take into account the ceiling height and the size of the pendant: the larger these are, the stronger and more reliable the suspension must be.
- Shade type. It determines how well the light is directed or diffused. At home, frosted one-piece shades that spread light evenly in all directions are popular. In offices, directional spotlights are used more often because they light the space directly below much better. There are always exceptions depending on the individual lighting plan.
- Base type: pin, screw or integrated LED. The last option is less universal, but such an LED pendant lasts much longer than alternatives with other light sources.
- Ingress protection: IP44 or higher if operating conditions are far from ideal, as is typical for stores and warehouses. If there are no climate issues, IP20 is enough.
- The right colour temperature depends on the room where the pendant will hang. Above the checkout area, for example, cooler daylight is better, while softer warm light suits general store lighting.
- Colour rendering index. Most retail and office spaces should use luminaires with CRI 80 or higher, as these values distort colour perception the least.
- Design. Pendant luminaires can be very varied, but at VisionLighting® we prefer restrained minimalism that fits almost any interior or venue.
Pendant luminaires are a good choice for lighting an office or store. VisionLighting® takes you through every stage, from an individual lighting project that meets all norms and standards to installing the pendants on site.
