Surface mounted lights

The simplest way to provide basic lighting in a public space, whether it is a store, a gym or even outdoors, is to use surface-mounted luminaires. Here is what you need to know about this type of light source.

What are the advantages of surface-mounted luminaires?

  • Easy installation. Pendant and track luminaires need secure suspensions, while most surface-mounted luminaires only need ordinary wall plugs or screws in pre-drilled holes.
  • Variety. Surface-mounted luminaires come in many shapes: round, cylindrical, linear or more complex geometric forms. There are even surface-mounted track luminaires for stores that combine easy installation with the flexibility of track lighting.
  • Efficiency. One standard surface ceiling luminaire is enough to provide compliant overhead light in a room the size of an average living room. Add a few small surface spots, and you can also create zoning, accents and other lighting solutions.
  • Reliability, especially for surface LED luminaires. LEDs run cool, withstand vibration and impacts well, and their diffusers are easy to make dust- and waterproof.
  • Long life. Most surface ceiling luminaires have a service life of tens of thousands of hours of continuous operation.

What to consider when choosing

Before you buy surface-mounted luminaires, decide on the following points.

  • Task. For overhead light in a room the size of a standard living room, one fairly powerful surface ceiling luminaire of around 70 W is enough, plus a few 11 W spots where more light is needed. Larger rooms and spaces with complex architecture need more luminaires, ideally placed according to a lighting plan prepared in advance.
  • Design. Surface luminaires for a store, for example, should fit the interior, not just light it. There are many options, including neutral minimalist designs like those from VisionLighting®, which suit any interior.
  • Technical specifications: a colour rendering index of 80 or higher, a colour temperature that suits the interior, and enough power to deliver 300 lux at any point of the space, in line with the standards for lighting public spaces.
  • Special conditions. In offices, for example, surface luminaires are often used as side lighting for workstations. They must be placed so that they do not cast unwanted shadows or get in the way. The same applies to warehouse racks, store checkouts and other places that need local diffused light.
