Street Lighting

Good lighting matters inside a shop or public building, but outdoor lighting matters just as much: it is what visitors see first. Below is what to look for in street luminaires and how to use them well.

Key requirements for street lighting

A good street luminaire should meet these requirements:

  • High ingress protection: IP54 at the very least, ideally IP67.
  • Mechanical strength: a steel or reinforced aluminium housing.
  • Corrosion protection, usually a powder coating or protective paint.
  • Good colour rendering: CRI 70 or higher, so faces, signage and vehicles look natural.
  • No visible flicker, or a very low flicker factor (under 10%). This matters most on main roads, where noticeable flicker quickly tires the eyes.
  • The right colour temperature: neutral white for roads, car parks and fuel stations, warmer light for pedestrian areas and residential streets.
  • Energy efficiency, the main reason LED street lights have replaced older sources.

Lighting of public outdoor areas in Ukraine is governed by DBN V.2.5-28:2018 and DSTU EN 13201, and ISO 8995 covers industrial sites, including outdoor areas such as warehouse yards. Vision Lighting engineers work to these standards. Private homes are not covered by them, so the lighting there can be designed freely.

Types of outdoor luminaires

  • Wall-mounted: similar to surface-mounted indoor luminaires, but tougher and better sealed.
  • Pole-mounted: classic street lamps on columns or brackets.
  • Ground-mounted: small luminaires installed directly in the ground.
  • Bollards: cylindrical light posts that give even, intensive light along paths.
  • Decorative: luminaires for highlighting signage, facades and other features. The rules for this kind of lighting have recently changed, so it is best handled by specialists.

In this section you will find Vision Lighting street luminaires: ALLEY for poles, brackets and slats, ROUNDABOUT for column and bracket mounting, and OVERBRIGHT recessed luminaires. We can also design the outdoor lighting for your shop, fuel station, car park or site so that it meets the standards and your own requirements.
