Linear LED luminaires: types and uses
The unique feature of linear LED luminaires is a completely new style of lighting. With any other type of lamp this effect cannot be achieved.
Today linear LED luminaires are hugely popular. They are successfully replacing their fluorescent predecessors thanks to greater versatility, efficiency and durability. Linear LED luminaires have more modern designs and specifications, as well as particular qualities that come with different colour temperatures.
LED luminaires are indispensable in offices, factories and retail spaces. They are used literally everywhere, from an ordinary home kitchen, where they often light the worktop, to large-scale architectural lighting and special lighting for specific kinds of work. Let us look at the other advantages of this type of lighting using Vision Lighting luminaires as an example.
What types of linear luminaires are there?
Linear LED luminaires differ in
- size and power;
- mounting method;
- the materials they are made of;
- colour temperature.
The range of sizes is convenient and varied. This helps you choose a luminaire for different purposes and for each room by size, power and more.
For example, there are different colour temperatures. The best-known and most common types of white are:
- Warm: 2700 to 3200 K
- Daylight: 3500 to 4500 K
- Neutral: 5000 to 6000 K
- Cool: 6000 to 8000 K
Colour temperature is a very interesting question. The choice depends on the type of room and its purpose, as each shade can strongly affect people and objects in the room. So when you choose linear luminaires for an office or a shop, the project manager will offer you completely different models.
- Neutral daylight white creates a working atmosphere in an office or a school.
- Warm candle-like light has a relaxing effect. Such lamps can be used in spas and beauty rooms, and in some shops.
- Cool light creates high contrast and is most useful for work that requires fine colour discrimination.
If you are not sure which colour temperature you need, a project manager is always ready to answer your questions. At Vision Lighting we will quickly select the luminaires you need and offer the option that suits your conditions best.
Where are linear luminaires used?
Linear LED luminaires are used everywhere, from lighting furniture, bathroom shelves and retail shelving to massive large-scale structures used in industry, at concerts and in city streets.
First of all, linear LED luminaires can be divided into those for:
- outdoor use;
- indoor use.
Outdoor luminaires are made with high protection ratings. Above all, outdoor designs have higher dust and moisture protection. Street luminaires are impact-resistant and withstand temperature changes.
This is because outdoor fittings often work in fairly extreme conditions: rain, dust, changing seasons and temperatures, a branch or an icicle falling in the wind and so on. Outdoor fittings are fixed to the external walls of buildings, mounted on brackets and poles, and on industrial machinery.
Indoors, pendant, ceiling, desk and wall mounting are used. Protection requirements for indoor fittings are lower, but there are exceptions. For example:
- luminaires used in high humidity, at sinks, in swimming pools and shower cubicles, must be moisture-proof;
- fittings that work in specific production conditions need dust protection;
- a bakery needs a luminaire that withstands high temperatures, and a cold store needs one that withstands sub-zero temperatures.
Advantages of linear luminaires
Linear luminaires have a great many advantages, and it is impossible to describe all their qualities in one article. Here are the most noticeable and important ones:
Efficiency
On average a linear lamp lasts more than five years. It is also very important that an LED lamp uses 10 to 20 times less electricity than an ordinary incandescent bulb, and is even 2 to 3 times more economical than compact fluorescent lamps. At the same time, the quality of light is many times better.
Shadow-free lighting
Thanks to diffused light and the absence of point sources (unlike lamps and chandeliers), linear LED lamps give even lighting without bright spots.
Convenient sizes
Thanks to a wide range of models and a convenient choice of sizes, linear luminaires are easy to select by size. Moreover, most linear fittings are modular. This means they can be joined in any number and at different angles. This lets you place the right accents and build large and small lighting structures.
Suitable for any room
Whatever the building you are choosing lighting for, the choice will be a good one. Linear luminaires for a shop or an office, for industrial production, or LED lamps for street lighting are an ideal option.
Linear luminaires can be used anywhere, and everywhere they can outperform other types of lighting.
- With concentrated, high-contrast light, many precision tasks are done more efficiently.
- In greenhouses and livestock farms, output rises thanks to ideal daylight lamps.
- In an office, work runs more smoothly and comfortably.
- Shop windows look simply great.
To achieve this effect, you only need to choose the right type of luminaire for your conditions.
