Office lighting project in the TORONTO business centre, Kyiv

We designed and carried out a lighting project for one of the offices in the TORONTO business centre. The interior uses Vision Lighting surface-mounted, track and linear luminaires.

Poor wellbeing and mood at work are often linked to poor-quality light. Typical office problems are low light levels, high flicker and a lack of daylight. Below we look at what office lighting should be like, using this office as the example.

02 · Light levels

Light level standards for office workplaces, meeting rooms and corridors

Building codes set illuminance for different areas and rooms. It is measured in lux:

  • workplace, conference room, meeting room: at least 500 lx;
  • office equipment area, corridor: from 300 lx;
  • work with drawings, texts or layouts: 600-750 lx.

03 · Lighting layout

Directional and general light in the TORONTO business centre office

Good office lighting combines two kinds of light. Work areas need directional light from spotlights, track or linear luminaires. General light comes from recessed or surface-mounted luminaires that fill the space evenly.

There should be no big difference in brightness or colour temperature between workplace light and general light. Such a difference is tiring and looks unbalanced. To avoid it, we calculate light levels in specialist software and prepare a 3D visualisation of the project.

04 · Colour temperature

Colour temperature for office work areas and break areas

Different colour temperatures have different effects. Neutral or cool light suits work areas. In break areas, light sources with a warm colour temperature work better.
